The Painted Hills
One of the 7 Wonders of Oregon, the Painted Hills are the most visited and famous of the units of the John Day Fossil Beds. They are marked by stunning colors created by different geological eras. The most vibrant colors are seen after a rainfall and the late afternoon sun makes the rolling hills look golden.
Sheep Rock Unit
The Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds is located about an hour northeast of Mitchell, Oregon and has several different stops (Blue Basin, Cathedral Rock, Foree & the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center) all marked by diverse geographic features and beautiful hikes making it a must see for visitors to the area!
The Clarno Unit
The Clarno Unit in the John Day Fossil Beds is about an hour and a half northwest of Mitchell, Oregon past the town of Fossil. It is marked by jagged peaks and unique rock formations.
The Surrounding Area
The drive throughout the area is beautiful with many varying geographies to see within a small area. Mitchell is the perfect location to visit not only the John Day Fossil beds, but also the John Day River and the Ochoco National Forrest.
